Currently, Windows 7 takes up about half of my 120 gb SSD. If I upgrade to Windows 8 through upgrade assistant(keeping all files), will it delete the old system files from Windows 7?, therefore taking up less space?

Thank you for your help.

If space is a worry, probably best to clean install W8, delete all partitions on your SSD and install to Unallocated Space. Activate Windows by performing a Refresh immediately after installing W8. (With Installation Media left in place, type 'Refresh' at your Start Screen and choose 'Refresh your PC' from Settings.
Then optimise your SSD using this Guide
