I might get a Xeon e7 8870, was wondering if it needs any special motherboard, or will it drop in to any lga 2011 board? I have an MSI x79a-gd45 plus i could use, not sure if will work or if I need a new board just for it.

Thanks!

Well, the x79a-gd45 plus is a later gen LGA 2011 board (probably doesn't matter) but the Intel ARK page says that the chip supports the C602J chipset (Which also supports the e5 and e3's that work on normal LGA 2011.) Does this mean that it could work, or is it possible that even though the chipset is probably compatible there could be a difference between the physical socket types?

I checked the MSI page and it only officilly supports the e5,s and i7's- probably could work with the e7 though unless there is a physical/electrical difference.

So any ideas? I still have no idea if it will work because it looks like it *could* but there may be a physical difference in the cpu that would make it not work.
