Will AGPx8 cards work on AGPx4 MBs?

My vid card died last night (Ti4600) and I need to get a new card quickly. I am finding tons of cards out there that are all listed at AGPx8. My motherboard is rated at x4.

The question is, will a X8 card work on a x4 MB? Are they backwards compatible? I was looking to get a fx5600 Ultra, but the reviews don't really give it any real speed increase (xcept for AA) over my old ti4600 Ultra. I am thinking about getting the MSI 4600 card, but it, too, is listed as being a AGPx8 card...

Any insight or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

As far as I know all 8x cards will run at 4x speeds. You wont notice any speed differance as neither the 8x or 4x can really use all the transfer speed, yet. Buy what you want and can afford. If you plan on upgrading in the future go ahead and get the 8x card.

ALL, read EVERY AGP8x card is 4x compatable. And current cards will give you the same performance at 4x as they would have at 8x.

Most AGP8x cards are even 2x compatable!

The biggest problem with 1x AGP slots is that...they don't exist. 1x was a compatability mode for 2x slots, AGP spec 1.0 was 3.3v and 2x.
