Will AMD Athlon 5350 be any good for basic music production?

Hello everyone!

I used to produce music with Fruity Loops on a Phenom II x4 955 machine which works perfectly for me.

Due to tight budget I sold that machine and got for free a cr*ppy PC with an Athlon 64+ 3500 cpu and 2Gb 667Mhz DDR2 RAM...
With this PC, I'm still able to produce, but after exceeding 60% of cpu usage it starts to lag and is not able to play the sound properly- crackling (even the mouse is lagging).

Since I'm on a strict budget, I'm thinking to upgrade my CPU-MB-RAM with AMD Athlon 5350, AM1 gigabyte MB and single slot Kingston 4Gb DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (for about 120 euro).
(I already have a great 650W PSU and SATA HDD which I won't replace).

My question now: Is AMD Athlon 5350 able to process FL studio (with maximum 5-6 not to heavy plugins) without stuttering and crackling?

I have also operate FL studio with an Atom N455 with same result as Athlon 64+ 3500 😛

Thanks!

In all Honesty I would not expect to much performance with the AM1 platform right now. I imagine For low power solutions and embedded products that it is a decent value but for a Desktop PC that 2.0Ghz Jaguar Architecture is not going to pump out even close the performance to a Phenom II 955. Maybe once there is more support for HSA architecture AMD A- Series processors will really shine. For the best Budget Solution right now has to be the Pentium G3258, Pair it with a Modestly priced Z97 MB and off you go. Also Kaveri is good since they really don't need a dedicated GPU.

On PIfast (single core performance), Athlon 5350 is 13 seconds slower than my already s*tty Athlon 64+ 3500!!

Now comparing the Intel G3258 to Athlon 5350...
3X faster?!

So I will probably go with Intel G3258 which you said and had great single core performance..
For graphics, I have an nvdia 7900GS so it will get the job done! 😛

Now will the MSI B85M-P33 would be ok paired with this CPU?
Because with this MB is pretty much the same total cost as the AMD offering.. ~120euro
If the MSI MB is ok, then for about the same money we have double the performance! (on non gaming scenarios)

So I get your point, the Athlon 5350 APU is only good for Multimedia PCs, light gaming and doing casual stuff and nothing more..
