Will an ati hd 6850 run on 460w coolermaster psu

I was about to purchase an Evga GTX 550 ti but it costs about 15k inr so I decided on the ati HD 6850.My power supply is CoolerMaster extreme power 460w.Will the psu support the card?

You are reading WAAAAAY too much into the feedback about updating the BIOS. The BIOS flashing thing is unique to the specific XFX card you linked. Some people feel that the default fan profile was too high and caused the card to make more noise than they wanted it to so they flashed a different BIOS to lower it. NO video card "requires" you to flash its BIOS, not the HD6870, not the HD6850 and not even the specific card you linked. It is something some people chose to do to lower noise levels on that one card.

Thanks a lot for the prompt advice.But where did you read this?I actually need a lot of info because I am getting a good gpu after a long time(I previously had the 9400gt) and am a novice in such matters.Plus I recently got this psu after quite a bit of trouble and don't want to upgrade as of now.

You do not need 40Amps, I'm running a HD 6870 (More power than a HD 6850)on my XFX 450W Core Edition power supply(34Amps Seasonic), also, the eXtreme power only has 26A on the +12V rails, so you may be ale to run it, I'm not sure though, coolermaster isn't the best brand, you could try.

Measured power consumption - 6850

Advertised TDP = 127W
System in IDLE = 176W
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 278W
Difference (GPU load) = 102 W
Add average IDLE wattage ~ 19W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 121 Watts

Should be fine.

Can you tell me which brand?Also does an amd hd 6850 require a 2x 6 pin pci e connector?My psu has only one and that was the primary reason why I was going for the 550 ti .I checked on the amd site too but they don't specify that(or maybe I was a bit careless) and so would welcome any advice on the same.

The 6850 only requires one 6 pin connector. I couldn't find the details on AMD's site either, but you can find power requirements for most cards on Newegg, including the needed power connectors, if any.

Just one 6 pin, and as far as which brand they are all about the same so I would go with the XFX one on newegg since it's as cheap as any of them and has a lifetime warranty.

AMD is recommending a 500w PSU to be on the safe side, but yours will be fine, the test results I posted were from a system with an overclocked i7, your core2duo will use alot less power.

The GTX 550 Ti actually uses slightly more power than the HD6850.
Cooler Master is not a good brand in general and especially their lower end PSUs like yours are quite poor. Despite being advertised as 460w it is only rated for 400w and more importantly the combined +12v wattage is only 312.
Fortunately the HD6850 maxes out at approximately 110w during normal usage(150w during stress testing, avoid this.) The 200w left over should be enough to power the rest of your system. It is far from ideal but I believe the card should work on your PSU. It will however be pushing things which isn't a very good idea. This can decrease efficiency and shorten the lifespan of a power supply. If you do go ahead with it don't be surprised if the PSU ends up giving out before too long.

I'm pretty sure he meant the Cooler Master. Your PSU should have no problem.
Don't say stuff like "HD 5850's run on ~32A" though. The HD5850 uses less than 10 amps under normal usage. That is all you can really say as the power needs of the rest of the system can vary widely.

Power supplies like to degrade over time while the junk units typically like to go out all at once but you will be able to run it but it won't last. You might get a year or two maybe more if you can keep it clean and cool that will help but if left like most months only to a year tops. That is in mind that fully loaded but if average loads are low it will hold up just fine but the rest of your system can't be to much of a power hog.

151w is the very max for this card can draw so factor that in mind how much the rest of your system can draw then budget from there.

20-30w for the board including the ram and waste heat from the power vrms for the cpu and ram.

65w for the cpu at stock but good news there these typically use a little less than their advertised wattage.

5-15w typical load for any hard drives per drive.

For the optical its mostly waste heat 5-10w.

I need some more help.....the Sapphire HD 6850 comes with two pci-e power connectors so its not compatible with my psu ..........so I was looking at the xfx one......but after reading some articles on the web,I saw that it requires BIOS flashing.........now what is that?Will it harm my Motherboard ?Also is it necessary to perform a BIOS flashing on the card when it comes from the dealer or only when I want to overclock it?IF there is any chance of my motherboard (MSI MS 7525)being damaged,should I go for the NVIDIA Evga GTX 550 ti?Or will that also require BIOS flashing?
