Okay the computer I have is a Sony Vaio VGC-RB30. Supposedly the mother board in the case is currently an micro atx. Can I put a new motherboard in that has a form factor of just ATX? Or would I have to buy an micro atx motherboard?

You can put a MicroATX motherboard in a regular ATX case, but not the other way around. If you want to continue using the Sony case, I recommend getting a microATX board. Why do you want a new motherboard? Due to the licensing, you will have to get a new copy of Windows, and I would recommend a new PSU also. If you are going that far, you might as well get a new case also, then you won't be limited as to what size motherboard you get.
