also second question if you know this as well. I understand that my gtx 760 will lose at least some fps but will there be a big difference if I run a 144 hz monitor with 2k vs my old 1080p 60hz monitor?

Solution
Your GTX 760 won't be able to RUN 1440p games, but yeah, you'll need to use Displayport or DVI-D to get that 144hz refresh rate. It will be included WITH the monitor.
What is your budget all up?
There could be an in between here.
What are your current specs?
If you mean 144hz, no, a HDMI connection will not carry 144hz. And for your second question, there will be quite a noticable difference in performance between the two monitors. Playing at a higher resolution means there will be a bigger workload for your GPU. If your GPU is already struggling to achieve a reasonable FPS count at medium/high settings on the games you play, you will have a hard time pushing out an extra 1612800 pixels.

what cable would you recommend I get for the monitor then?

oh I didn't realize a cord would come with the monitor. Haven't opened the box yet too busy as of late. I have a 760 but plan to upgrade to a 1080 or around therect in December. I have an oc 8320 that's pushing 4.1 ghz. in early 2017 I plan to upgrade it an Intel chip and motherboard
