Will an i5 8400 8th Gen processor work in my current ASUS motherboard?

I'm planning on buying a new processor as my current one is about 6 years old.

Current motherboard and processor:
- ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 motherboard (HERE)
- AMD FX 6300 Six Core

I want to buy the Intel i5 8400 8th Gen processor but I wasn't able to find out if it would be compatible with my current motherboard? Could someone help me?

No. An Intel CPU is not compatible with your motherboard. An 8xxx CPU isn't compatible with your RAM either. For an Intel 8xxx CPU you need an Intel 3xx (H310, Z370, etc) chipset motherboard and DDR4 RAM

Damn, that's a lot worse than I was expecting haha. Do you know of an AMD processor similar in strength to the i5 8400 that would work with my machine? Thanks for the help.

No. Your motherboard is too old for anything similar to i5-8xxx performance. You need to replace it all to get the performance you want.
