I will be getting a Corsair force series GS 120GB SSD and going to use it as an OS drive on my computer. But let's say I want to transfer files from that SSD to my friends computer via USB, would that work? I've seen they have a cable like that in the upgrade kits, but I don't know if I could directly copy files off my SSD with that thing.

Solution

Well then.
I have one similar to this, and use it frequently. Just for temporary use.

You can use a USB to SATA adapter if you want, but Windows will still read it like a hard drive. It may or may not be automatically recognized by Windows and could require initialization, which must be done before using the drive, as all data is lost during the process.

I would recommend buying an external enclosure with USB 3.0.

Windows sees the SSD as just another internal SATA drive.
Yes, if you take it out, and connect to another PC via a USB-SATA cable connection, I guess you could do that. But would you take a regular hard drive out to do that? No.

Just use a regular flash drive. or connect to the same LAN.

Can you recommend any particular external enclosure?

Wait wait wait...

So you want to use this SSD as your OS/boot drive. But you also want to be take it out and transfer files to your friends PC. And then put it back in to use as the OS/boot drive in your PC.

Is this correct?

If so - WHY?
Just get a 32gb USB drive and use that.

I don't really mind taking it out and putting it back in, it's not something I'm going to do frequently. I could get a USB drive, but the SSD has a lot more space and it would simply save me the cost of getting a USB drive. Plus aren't SSD's pretty robust?
