Will an OEM Socket 939 CPU fan fit socket AM2?

I finally made it to Idiot First Class! I’m building a basic system for my Uncle, and instead of ordering the retail Processor in a Box, I accidentally added the OEM version to my cart. I have to have this built over the weekend, so there’s no time to order a replacement. (Actually, I’m doubly a moron because I actually checked over the order several times before placing it, and I usually look for OEM/white box for other components.)

The new processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2.2GHz, Socket AM2.

I have an original retail fan from an AMD Athlon 64 3700+, a Socket 939 CPU that sat in an Epox 9NPA+ Ultra. The rig was only used for about a year or so. I know I have to go to Radio Shack and pick up a bit of thermal compound, and it looks like it will fit, but I thought to ask just in case I’m headed for disaster. Is there anything else I should be aware of/know? Should I start calling around for new fans?

If it makes a difference, the new processor is going into an Asus M2N-VM DVI, and will be run completely stock (i.e., no OC).

Thanks!!!

Moronically yours,

Rhythm

You should compare the size of the heatspreader on both processors, if they are identical in size then you should be fine. It's not a perfect solution, but give it a try?

There shouldn't be any problem at all. As long as the cpu isn't overclocked, almost any of the stock AMD heatsinks will fit and work on both the 939 and AM2 series.

Should be no different. I've downloaded the white papers for 939,940 and AM2 and the physical dimensions are 100% identical.
