I know about chipsets and matching them up with CPUs with FM2 and FM2+ and that the chipset is a factor in which CPU will work with what PC? Is it the same with the FX CPU's as well. This is my first time shopping for an FX CPU and I'm lost when it comes to matching FX CPU's and FX Motherboards... Thanks much.

I've never posted before so how do I know when my post is answered

Solution
Not all AM3+ socket (works with the FX series CPU's) motherboards are FX motherboards. The FX after (example) 990fx does not mean that the FX series CPU will fit that board. They have the older 790fx chipsets that will not work with the FX series CPU's.

If you plan on OCing and/or plan on using 2 or more GPU's then the 990FX is the way to go but if you are not going to OC or run duel GPU's then the 970 chip set is the best option at this point. Some 970 chip sets will OC quite well others are bad at it.

summery: the FX at the end of the chip set number does not designate that the FX series CPU's will work. It is a designation of features it has.
There are other Chip sets that will work with the FX series CPU's ranging from 780 Chip...

Solution
AleksH's Answer: Yes because it is still an AM3+ socket.

arllc312mjf replies: Yes, thank you. I'm new to this site so I don't know if I have to choose one reply? I consider all of your posts to be relevant and informative. I have taken all the information to further check a little closer to make sure, and visit the manufacturer's website to see if the MB matches the FX CPU.

Thanks to all of you.
