Will anything get screwed up if I replace my processor with the exact same processor?
My processor (i7-4790k) has been overheating with its stock cooler on (I've had it about a year and a half) and I was going to put a hyper 212 cooler on it; however, the processor still has a warranty from Microcenter, so I was going to just take out the processor, bring it back, get the exact same i7-4790k brand new, bring it home, throw it in my computer, and then put the Hyper 212 cooler on it. Figured might as well use the warranty and get a new one and on top of that not have to scrape off thermal paste when installing the hyper 212.

Never done this before though, will it just be plug-and-play since it's the exact same type of processor or will there be some need to reinstall windows or any other possible annoying or catastrophic failures?

Thanks!

It will be completely plug and play and require no reinstall of anything.

With the hyper212 you wont have to worry about the horrible intel push-pins.

Do make sure though that the rest of your fans are working properly and flowing the right way.
I have seen a case come from the factory with the back fan installed wrong and blowing into the case instead of sucking out

sounds to me like you have a perfectly good, working processor and you want to swap it. That sounds like something that Microcenter as well as me would highly frown upon. Microcenter has been great to me as a customer and returning stuff that is broken. I would hate for them to stop having such a great return policy because of a few people abusing it.

Why is it overheating, and why would an exact replacement be any better?

Definitely NOT trying to abuse the policy, my processor gets to 99C within 30 seconds of starting any video render. I think the cooler has something to do with it but there's no way it's just the cooler. Should've been more clear.

Also even before it gets to 99c, it goes from 45C idle to 75C+ within literally half a second to one second after clicking "render," and jumps all over the place temp wise all the time when working. Not like normal up and down, but like 30C jumps out of nowhere

Sounds like a poor cooler install to me.
Do you have any OC on this?

It's more than likely a bad cooler install. My recommendation is to go ahead and get the cooler instead, and if it still overheats after putting in the cooler, then contact microcenter. Safest route, and if your temps are better, then you don't even need to replace the processor.
