Title says it all. I only have 4GB RAM and would like to upgrade to 16GB RAM. I do not know much about motherboards, RAM and compatibility, and could use some help to buy the right kind of RAM.

Are they compatible, or would you suggest a different kind of RAM?

I have looked at the QVL, but the max GB RAM tested is 4GB RAM, which would mean that I would need 4 sticks to get 16GB RAM. However, I would prefer only 2 sticks of 8GB RAM.

Is that why Crucial suggest 4x4GB RAM and not 2x8GB RAM when I search for 16GB RAM compatible with my motherboard? Do you think 4 sticks would cause problems for the memory controller? I read somewhere that 2 sticks are more easy on the memory controller and therefore preferable.

I already have 2x2GB RAM. If I decided to only go with 8GB RAM, would you suggest that I add 2 more sticks of the same RAM, or should I replace my old ones with 2x4GB RAM?

The risk is that the new kit of 2, even if same model as the memory you're currently running, would include high density chips and therefore, would not be compatible. I'd replace the kit.
On the other hand, maybe it would be good to save money for upgrading the whole system, instead of adding more RAMs.
