Will asus radeon 4770 work?

just purchased one asus radeon 4770! problem is im not sure if my pretty much bone stock system will run it. i have a gateway 503gr,its a intel pent.4 with the 3.0 ghz, 800 mhz system bus processor,i also purchased 4 new pny 1gb dual channel ram the hard drive is a 160 gig serial ata 7200 rpm. i dont do alot of hard-core gaming but ive been playing alot of AoE 3 and it will run on my system but is very slow.which makes it a very boring game to play.so my question is will i be able to just pop the card in and download the drivers and be set to go.if needed i have a 500watt psu then i can switch over.any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if u are using the stock psu on ur gateway, then that might pose a problem...the minimum requirements for the 4770 say 450w, which I doubt is what comes with ur gateway...I would recommend using the 500watt power supply u said you had...

btw...ur system is definitely going to get bottlenecked by ur processor severely...but i guess you dont care since you said your not doing much gaming...

yeah im pretty much new to the whole thing so any advice would be greatly appreciated.what is a decent mobo and processor would i be able to get them both for under $200?

you can easily buy a mobo and cpu for under $200 today's days (and fairly good ones too)...I'm not exactly sure what type of memory you just bought so I dont know if they will work if you were to upgrade your cpu and mobo...did you get DDR2 ram?

I'd say your mobo only takes DDR400....and has an AGP slot at best...I'm doubting you have the required pci-express slot for the 4770 also...

You may b able to save a little money by getting a P35 motherboard instead of the P45...this is a full ATX motherboard so make sure your case isnt a mini atx or anything....your screwed on that ram you bought if its not DDR2

You may b able to save a little by going with this power supply but it wouldnt b my 1st choice bc I am unsure of the brand

Yeah, need a little more info to be sure that it will work. It can be a real pain sometimes to upgrade those prebuilts.

Just build a new machine and forget about the old OEM pre-built PC like I am doing. I had factory/pre-built Sony Vaio Desktop and upgrading it is a pain in the neck. The new PSU would not even fit into my Sony Vaio case! I need the new PSU because new video cards require it but my upgrade path was limited and I was stuck with 290W PSU! Sony won't allow other manufacturer's component to work with this OEM machine and Sony won't even make a 500 W PSU for this old model!

However, now Sony Vaio Desktop Video-editing PC has worked fine for 4-5 years without any problem until I had to upgrade due to its system aging. Now, I shall build a new PC with everything new.

Custom-built PC is the best option and I had learned my lesson. I had good and bad experience with pre-built PCs but the worse case scenario or my worst experience is that I was not able to upgrade my PSU and my video card.

Just to share with you and I would recommend you to build new PC with New Case. If you are gaming then you would need a PC Gaming Case with at least 5 fans. Good Luck!

well its a intel pentium 4 w/hyper threading 530 processor it runs @ 3.0 ghz & 800 mhz with 1 mb L2 cache(what ever that means), intel 915 g chip-set it says a intel graphics media accelerator 900 with available pci-express slot.the hard drive is a 160 gb sata 7200rpm with 8 mb cache. the ram came with 1 gb(2x512) but ive already upgraded it with 4x1 gb pny ram ,so its maxed out (i know it will only use 3gb).the psu is a 500 watt coolmax 500b atx 12v v2.2/eps 12 v 2.91.i did buy ddr400(pc3200) but it wont be a total waste i can always use it in another computer lying around. i just want to make sure the card works with what i have and im pretty positive i have at least one pci-e x 16. i thank everyone for their input its always nice to join a forum and people answer your questions,especially for a noob like myself.

it says it has an expansion slot for a pci-e card.i have no clue i guess i should have done some research before i bought the stuff.if the asus 4770 wont work can some give me a suggestion as to a suitable compomise(graphics card that is). thanx for all the help. i dont think my 500 wat psu will fit in my case anyway. even if it did i would have no clue how to hook it up. i was just looking for a simple drop and play.i play AoE 3 or at least i try when its working.

ATI's HD Radeon Cards, do not work with Intel 915 chipsets.
You will encounter a UAA HD Audio Bus Driver conflict in the Device Manager, as the Intel 915 chipset was made BEFORE HD Audio it is unable to allocate an IRQ for the HD Audio Sound Chip on the HD Radeon Card.

I had this problem and i solved this problem, by using Nvidia's GFX cards which are ALL backwards compatible. AMD admitted there is a problem and sent me an AMD 690G motherboard and a Dual-Core CPU, I suggest you buy the card, write to AMD an get yourself the free components from a company that knows it is mis-selling its most popular brand.
