Solution
You may not have the option for a clean install if you use the free upgrade, but all else being equal, a system with a clean install tends to be more stable than a system with an in-place OS upgrade.

Just to name a couple reasons, clearing out orphaned/corrupt/etc files is always a good idea. If you're using a HDD, a full format will also mark any sectors that have gone bad over time.
Windows 10 upgrade might be an in-place upgrade done so through the Windows store as with the Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade. If you have the retail software disc for Windows 8.1, you can try a repair install first if you think that there will be issues. You may or may not have to reinstall Windows. I remember having issues upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 a couple of years back and I had to reinstall Windows.

For Windows 7, I would definitely recommend a fresh install.

Over the years there's so much trash that compiles on your PC. If you have older Win 7 PC get a cheap SSD, you can find one for $50 sometimes. Put a Win 10 on it and you just added 2-3 years to your PC.

You PC experience will improve dramatically.
