Will ddr2 800(pc 6400) work on a Asus P5W DH deluxe board

this board has the 975x chipset, and it says this chipset doesnt support ddr2 800, but then wen i read reviews about this board they seemed to be able to run ddr2 800 ram on it or even ddr2 1033 can someone clear this up for me? whats the deal?

It will run it, just make sure you research any compatibility issues with certain brands of RAM before you buy.

Yeah, the board can overclock decently well. Right now I am overclocked to 1066 with Patriot 8500EL 2G kit.

Yeah it will. Two points:

1) Check compatibility. Dont shoot yourself in the foot. Some historical issues here
2) If you cant OC that high, then you are just wasting the extra headroom. Look at my sig. Its all dependent on the FSB. If you cant get it to 400+, then you are just wasting money (RAM/2 should = FSB). If your FSB is 377 like in my setup, then my RAM is running at 754Mhz, short of the rated 800Mhz.

Try find a graph about this boards FSB to clock. You'll see there is a massive window of FSB speeds that cant be reached (cant remember, but somewhere between 390 and 425). Thats on my setup at least. Just Google it. You'll find lots of info. Very difficult to generalize. Each system is different.

DDR800 will show some improvement over even with the CPU at stock speeds but, it is not a huge increase. Your best performance will come, as noted, with the CPU OCed to FSB400+ at a 1:1 ratio with the memory.
