I recently purchased a 4 GB kingston 1600mhz ram for a computer im building and then I have just realised that it is DDR3l will it work fine? The motherboard I am planning for it to go into isn't new and previously had 1066mhz DDR3 RAM.

Barring any strict incompatibilities, yes it will. DDR3L is backwards compatible with DDR3.
All DRAM manufacturers construct DDR3L ICs and DDR3 ICs use identical chips, with DDR3L ICs using higher quality samples.
