Will Displayport to HDMI allow for higher refresh rates?

I'm quite new to displays and such and I've tried looking around but my situation is a bit different than what I can find online. I have a gpu with displayport output, but my monitor doesn't have displayport (despite being advertized as 75hz). If I were to use an adapter and plug in displayport to the computer and hdmi to the monitor, would I be able to get that extra refresh rate?

You do not say what specific video card you have, in general you want to avoid a dongle if at all possible.
if you can use HDMI to HDMI or VGA to VGA etc, mini HDMI to regular HDMI should not be an issue.
Using a dongle can lead to weird problems. Who wants to read around and unplug the cord from the video card wait a few secs then plug it in again and stuff like that right ? Your mileage may vary

What monitor is it?

If it advertises as 75Hz with only hdmi inputs, try create custom resolution and add 75Hz to it. More than likely Windows only sees it as a 60Hz panel because it probably is with the option for overclocking (Overclocking is just upping the Hz from native) the monitor to achieve 75Hz. So if this is the case, an adapter wont help.

Fyi, Hdmi 1.3, 1.4 and 2 can all do 1080p @ 120Hz, the catch is the monitor manufacturer has to incorporate the ability. Hdmi over 60Hz is becoming more common nowdays. Displayport is the preferred connection though, you have guarantees then.
