Will GTX 970 bottleneck FX 6300?

An example of it bottlenecking a game is far cry 4.

This is ultra settings at 1080p. Minimum FPS is dropping well below 60fps according to Tom's benchmarks

By bottlenecking, I am referring to which will max out first, the cpu or the gpu. In this case it is the CPU maxing out and not allowing the GPU to perform any further when it is clearly able to in this case.

Yeah rite dat game is not well optimized but still better than AC Unity😛

The i5 is getting a minimum of 71fps according to that benchmark. No bottleneck there at all. It is the GPU that is limiting the performance in the case of the i5.

I'm not saying gaming on an FX6300 will be terrible, I'm just answering the question. It will limit the performance of a GTX970.

made my day ahaha,.. anyways it is still a good pair for gaming.

but if you really want to go enthusiast, get a 1st tier procie because that 970 is a 1st tier gpu.

stay away from the FX line they will give you the same performance in gaming even if it is 6 cores or 8 cores with 3.5ghz - 4.5ghz

i mean the 8350 would not mean much of an upgrade from 6350 in terms of gaming.

so my i5 4460 paired with a r9 270x is equal to a 9590 paired with a gtx 970

cuz im getting the exact same frames on the exact same settings on my system

yes, it will, but not in anyway that would impact gaming at 1080p 60fps. However cpu intensive games like BF4 will be effected. You will see people hitting 200-300 fps on a 970 on CS:GO for example, however your setup will reach only 90-120. But like i said, it wont impact gaming at 60fps@1080p.

I will mostly play games like Battlefield 4 and BF Hardline when it gets released. I'm currently getting 35-50 FPS on Ultra on BF4 with a radeon HD 7970. Should I upgrade both my CPU and GPU?

What motherboard do you have? If you mostly play battlefield then an upgrade to an FX-83xx would be good too

Jim makes the most sensible / valid points here.
It'll limit the 970 in so much as minimum fps on most games will stay the same if its the cpu limiting them.
& the best way of testing this with your current card is to run at medium graphical settings & see what your lowest fps drops to.
With a 970 you'll run at ultra but with that same minimum fps drop in the same places.
Generally though you'll sit at 60fps vsynced 90% of the time on most new titles.
& I do suggest running vsyncd - its absolutely pointless running a game at 100-150 fps on a 60htz monitor ,maxing your GPU to 100% & making it run hotter & noisier for no reason other than bragging rights.

I'm running a 6300/gtx 970 & on most new titles locked at 60fps GPU usage sits around 80% with temps of 60-65c which suits me fine.

Whether its a viable upgrade from a 7970 is not so easy to answer.
You're only looking at a 15-20% performance increase generally.
I went from a 280x (pretty much a 7970) to the 970 mainly for lower power/temps in my mini htpc gaming rig.
It was a worthwhile upgrade for me in that respect ,the performance boost I take as a bonus & a nice one at that even though I was fairly happy with the performance of my old card.
The 970 performance has generally been slightly overhyped IMO ,its a good card but its not suddenly going to transform your PC into a top tier gaming rig.
Where it wins is its ability to run in fairly confined cases with very low temp & power constraints & still throw out excellent performance.

Sig - you don't be averaging anywhere the same fps as a 6300 & a gtx970 with your 270x.
You may hit that 70fps a couple of times in the game whereas the 970 will sit at or around that 70-80% of the time.

& I didn't know we had a CPU tier list ,that's another one I'll ignore like the PSU tier list which is also worthless IMO to anyone but the absolute novice who has no idea whatsoever what the difference is between one PSU & another.

Vaqh - you would be better advised to get a decent cooler & oc that 6300 a little rather than looking at upgrading to an 8 core, once you get up to 4ghz+ on the 6300 the difference between a 8350 & the 6300 oc in gaming is negligible.
