Hello Everyone from TH Community! I am planning on upgrading my old GPU (AMD Radeon HD 5670) for the beast GTX 980 ti. However, i am afraid of bottlenecking said beast as the rest of my components are rather old as well, here is a list:
CPU: Intel i5-2500k
MOBO: MSI z77-g45 Gaming
RAM: 8GB
PSU:500 watts
Intel SSD 250 GB.
I mainly play games at 1080p, but, will upgrade monitor soon. So here's my question. To upgrade or not to upgrade?
Also i will be using the GTX 980 for a future 5-7 months from now build if i happen to upgrade.
If i happen to need a new PSU please recommend a cheap placeholder one as well.

Solution
For 250$ budget, I would probably go for: http://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-24-Inch-Screen-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404936934&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+120hz+monitor

But if I were you I would hang on to the 1080p monitor you have now and save up a little and get something bigger with an IPS panel. They are expensive but your GPU will be able to handle it and utilize it. Otherwise this 144Hz monitor will also help. With a 980 ti if you get a 1080p monitor, get something that runs faster than 60Hz otherwise it becomes a waste.

Hello

Yes the GPU will work. Those i5 2500k still perform very well and should still get the job done for the foreseeable future. If you want you can overclock the CPU as well to get even better performance out of it. If you buy this card you will be sorted for at least the next 5 - 7 month period as you stated. So if you are going to upgrade, you can carry the GPU over as well.

The PSU might be a bit on the small side. Nvidia's site recommends atleast a 600W PSU. So I would go for something in the 700W to 800W range for a little headroom. You should never skimp on buying a PSU. Quality PSUs can save the life of your PC and also extend it. I would say spend on it now, because it is going to save you in the future and you can also carry it over from build to build.

I can really recommend the Corsair ones. You can get this one in either 750W or 850W: http://www.corsair.com/en/hx-series-hx750-power-supply-750-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-modular-psu

Hope this helps :)

Thank you Zyb3r for your response. I have to admit, i was afraid i'd have to rebuild my pc from the ground up. I have a $1000 USD buget for a GTX 980 ti a good PSU and hopefully a decent monitor just for upgrade parts (placeholder until my next build is ready) Any monitor you'd recommend that fits my budget?

If I had the money to buy a Gtx 980 ti, I would go for the Gigabyte GTX 980 ti G1 Gaming. Thats $689: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125787
PSU is $165: http://www.corsair.com/en/hx-series-hx750-power-supply-750-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-modular-psu

That leaves $146 for a screen, which might be a tight budget. This is not going to get you outside the 1080p range, but you can pick up a decent 1080p monitor for that price or maybe a little more.

Maybe check out http://www.144hzmonitors.com/gaming-monitors-buyers-guide-september-2015/

Thank you. I can push my budget $100-150 in order to get a decent-monitor. High resolution if possible. I will look into the guide you posted and see if anything matches my budget. Have any recommendations yourself?
