Will high refresh IPS be the ultimate monitor if more commonly available?

Having a really hard time deciding whether to go for a high refresh/G-Sync monitor or IPS.

I have just discovered that my 8 year old Samsung Syncmaster 226BW is a TN panel, I have become very used to it. I have not experienced a IPS panel.

I have a new system that is now running games very well and I find the high refresh/G-Sync interesting.
I don't do any graphical type work but am Interested in using Pro Tools.

So which is going to blow my mind, beautiful graphics or high FPS?

Solution
OLED would be the best, if they can get the costs down.
And then there are quantum dot monitors...

Technology is always changing. Whats the best today is likely to be junk in 2-3 years.
Most people don't really care about color accuracy. Truth is most people just "eye ball" what looks right and go from there. However motion blur, graphics stutter and even input lag is something just about anyone can see. Also on poor quality, or poorly calibrated IPS panels have wash out blacks. So with that being said GOOD TN panel will usually be the better recommendation for people.

IPS panels really are better suited for people that prize viewing angle, color accuracy FAR ABOVE all other criteria. IMO this is graphics professionals and gamer who play slower paced games like MMOS and strategy games.

true, but same thing can be said about high refresh rates or g-sync monitors
if you first have tasted the sweetness its hard to go back

Future, definitely OLED's, not LED LCD's, or maybe even something new nobody heard of yet. IPS TV, IPS, monitor, IPS phone. I would also never go back to TN or something inbetween like VA, I just don't like them. Hopefully OLED monitors will be developed because we really need better black levels, we went from CRT with near infinite black levels to LCD's, huge downgrade. Marketing teams are making sure that will never happen though... 🙁

CRT's did not lose out because of marketing. They lost out because they were 85 year old technology that simply could not even hold a candle to what the monitors of today can do. And these monitors weight a fraction of what a CRT weighted, and use far less power. I cannot think of a single thing that a CRT did better than a flat panel can do.

I start using computers before there were any personal computers. I used CRT monitors for many years. And you would NEVER get me to go back to one. And I do tend to remember some very gray blacks too...

I'm just trying to decide what I would enjoy/benefit from the most now until a high refresh IPS or better was a option. I don't do any professional image type work, a lot of web browsing and some gaming.

i would go for a high refresh rate monitor
it is just that everything is so butter smooth even normal web surfing or windows work i improved by higher refresh rates.
and as you said, your system can handle games very well, so you would be able to see the fps that you are actually getting in games.
but thats just me, you have to decide for yourselfe.

I had a look at a AOC e2460Sd TN panel, a Asus VX279H IPS panel and a Samsung S27D390H PLS today and I honestly could not see any difference between them. I actually even adjusted a colour setting on the AOC and the desktop background image became identical to Asus IPS panel colourwise (they had the same background image.) Dragging windows around on the Samsung were terrible, slow screen perhaps? I must admit that photos looked pretty good on the Samsung considering the 1920 x 1080 resolution over 27" even up close.

So far IPS is not impressing me, looks no different to the AOC TN panel..

Ah didn't think of it at the time. If I go back in I'll try to.

I'm thinking about the BenQ benq xl2411z. I'm not a hardcore gamer but not sure if that matters in regards to wanting high refresh, I also don't do colour critical work. I don't want a budget IPS but I don't need pro grade IPS either, an all rounder I guess if I decide against high refresh.

Some monitors are more for editing because they have slow response times, however that isn't really a thing today, unless you buy high end 10 bit panels if you're working in print, etc. They're all pretty much the same except color, contrast and viewing angles. If you like what one looks like then buy one, if you don't like what one looks like and buy it anyways you're going to enjoy it much less.

Don't forget that Dell owns Alienware. Most monitors are multipurpose anymore. One person might say a given monitor is great for office work, and then next person will look at the stats and think its a great gaming monitor.

There are some people that work in very specialized businesses that do still have special monitors that they prefer, but more and more things are converging. Probably by the time we reach 4k resolutions or possibly 8k, everyone will be able to be happy with the same monitors.

High refresh freesync and gsync ips monitors are available. Acer makes the gsync one and the Asus MG279Q is freesync. Just ordered the Asus myself. I'm one who can't stand the color shifting of TN panels. I also don't specialize in quick twitch fps games. I do play plenty of fps though.

I also know a cheap ips that you can't setup right won't look that great.

The G-Sync IPS monitors are out of my budget, also 27'' 1440p. I'm looking for a 1080p 24''. Monitors I've looked into so far are:

High refresh monitors:
Asus VG248QE G-Sync
Benq XL2411Z
AOC g2460Pqu

Reading around the Benq should have the best colours. The AOC doesn't have presets I think.

Non high refresh and good for gaming:

There's probably a whole heap but so far I keep hearing the Dell UltraSharp U2412M

Any suggestions to add to this list?
