Will I be able to get the files off my old drive?

My hard drives been kind of buggy since I bought it, but it was cheap and it still worked. At one point, it didn't want to boot into windows (just a flashing underscore), but I reinstalled windows and it worked as it did before. It happened again, but this time I'm buying a new hard drive, because there's a sale going on for Christmas.

My question is, if I install windows on the new hard drive and plug in the old one, will I be able to recover some files? I mainly want to get some pictures that my mum stored on there that have no backups, and after that I'll be throwing away that hard drive.

If it's not too far gone you should be able to plug it in and pull whatever you need off it.
