currently running amd 8150 8 core cpu with 16gb ram on an asus crosshair v formula mobo and an xfx amd radeon 6900 series video card. Was wondering if I would see any benefit with an asus r9 280 or 280X? or possible another xfx?
Depends on the particular model of HD 6900. Yes for the 6950, probably for the 6970, iffy for the 6990 (but that's only because the last one is a dual-GPU unit).
The biggest thing, however, is that the 6900 series was released over 4 years ago. The R9 series are rebranded & updated versions of the 7000 series, so if your GPU is nearing the end of its legs it might be time for an upgrade.

not to say its the same but I went from a 6850 to a 7850 and it was better for me -- the 7850 ended up to be a nice card and did see a difference between the two [opinion]
