I have a Duron 900 and a GF2 mx400 with 256mb of DDR, will i handle HL2 at low settings, like 800 x 600 or even 1200x 700. If not what should i upgrade to get passable performance?

I don't remember HL2 min system requirements. You'll problably be able to run it at "acceptable" speed ant min settings, but it might look like HL1 though. I think you really should upgrade if you want to fully enjoy what the game has to offer

Yea this is my second system and i plan to network em, would it be a waste to put a fast video card in it without upgrading the cpu if its needed?

the min video card requirements is a DX6 card and a 800MHz CPU. It will work fine at lowest settings.

I think so..
Duron 900 is quite a major bottleneck.

You can probably put a Thunderbird or possibly even an AXP in your system depending on the motherboard. Also, a Radeon 9600 Pro looks like a good card for higher settings. But for lower settings you'll probably do find wirth a Readeon 9000 or GeForce2 GTS or someting else cheap.

Hmm I'm in a similar situation too so I guess I'll post it here rather than in a new thread. I'm running an 800mhz duron. The question is what to replace my current vanta lt with? (yeah, it came with the computer and i dont play many games. excet hl1 which runs great at 640x480!) So im wondering will my cpu be able to handle any directx 9 eyecandy at all even if I buy something like a radeon 9800np? Or is it just way to slow and I'd be stuck in DX8 mode with the lowest detail settings? If so, would a 9800 offer any noticeable performance increases than something like say a 9600 pro or even a ti4200? I'm really excited about HL2 but I hesitate to get a whole new motherboard/cpu/memory and graphics card setup just to play it.

There is no way you will be able to run up to speed for DX9 on that system. A Radeon 9800 Pro is a good card, but it can't do miracles. It might be a good idea to get a new CPU, RAM, and Video card.

How tight is your budget?
What is your current MOBO & RAM?

Depending on what motherboard you have now, you might bre bable to upgrade to an Athlon XP (As cheap as $50 for a 1500+) A Radeon 9600 Pro would cost you about $150 and a 980 Pro will cost $400. So if your tight on money, I would go with the 9600 Pro, and spend the rest of the money getting the system up to par with a 9600 Pro.

Yea the mobo is an Asus A7V 266 so eventually it will get a 2400+ and a nice video card, prob when doom3 and / or stalker comes out. By then i'm hopeing a 9800np will have dropped in price a bit more. And a 2400+ will be like 50 bucks. I'm not diluded that the Asus board will hold the 2400 am i?

How much DDR RAM installed on your mobo and what is your chipset? If you want to play Half-Life 2 your going to need to upgrade soon. A 9800 Pro and a cheap AXP 2400+ should do the trick like your saying. Heck, even a 9600 Pro should do the trick if you can't afford both the 9800 Pro and the CPU.

I'm using a Presario 5002US with an OEM version of a FIC az31 and 320MB of pc133. I think it only supports up to a 1.1 tbird and theres no way to flash the bios to my knowledge. I'd like to keep costs down below $250, and was looking at a 9800 non-pro for $230. But if I'd still have to run on minimum detail I'll save a hundred bucks and get a 9600pro instead. I guess it's almost time for me to get a new mobo/cpu (been thinking of an is-7 and 2.4c for a while) but I'll probably wait for price drops after Scotty and A64.
Hey just curious, how much worse will DX8 mode look than DX9? Will all the shininess and fancy lighting I saw in the demo be nonexistant in DX8?

DX8 should look pretty good. It's rumored that DX8 cards can deliver 90% of the eyecandy that the DX9 cards have. DX9 will look spectacular, DX8 will look great, & DX 7 mode will possibly look "acceptable".
