Will I still be able to repair my external hard drive after 'chkdsk /r' in cmd is interrupted?

My external hard drive won't open. It keeps prompting me to 'format it' even though I was able to use it a couple of hours ago. I think what caused it was the loosening of the USB cable that connected the drive to my desktop PC. I then ran 'chkdsk /r' hoping that it might be able to fix my hard drive and let me open it again. Halfway through the process of 'chkdsk /r', the USB cabled loosened a little bit again which caused the hard drive to disconnect for a second and it halted my 'chkdsk /r' in cmd. I don't know if my files got more corrupted and my drive became more unrepairable. Please help! I have important files on this disk. By the way, I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I don't think interruption of chkdsk will have done any harm, and certainly not if it was just reading data, not writing any.

If the USB cable connection is flakey/loose, get a new cable for it before trying to use the drive again.

It must also be be said that saving important data to a single hard drive is asking for trouble.
You must keep backups of that data on another hard drive in case one of them fails (which it surely will one day, in fact it may already have failed).
