Hello,

I run a d0 i7 920 on Asrock x58 Xtreme MoBo and 6GB 1066 RAM. Lately I've been looking to upgrade my GPU to r9 380x. Since then I ran across many different information on the question asked in the title. Everyone says differently. I plan to OC my CPU to at least 3.5Ghz and preferably 3.8 or even 4.0 if everything goes well and my cooler stays up to the task.

Am I safe to upgrade to r9 380x with these overclocks without getting a massive bottleneck problem? I am aware that slight bottleneck is expected since this is an old CPU and I simply can't expect it to run as newest chips even on overclock. I have had an offer to get that used GPU for 140$ so it would be a great deal to extend the life of my getting-old gaming rig.

Depends on the game.
Regardless if the R9-380X represents a big jump in graphics capability, you will perform better.
If your games are fast action shooters, you will likely be pleased.

To get some idea,
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

FWIW, I see lots of negative newegg comments for various R9-390X cards.
