Will in ear headphones with mic work for PC gaming

Hi toms hardware community,
I have a pair of in ear headphones that have a built in mic for calling. Will the mic work for gaming on a PC?

If the mic is a quality piece, yeah, sure.

I watch a streamer that uses just a earphone and it's built-in mic and the sound is crystal clear. It all depends of the quality of it, test it out and see for yourself

In ear earphones will work for PC gaming but one of the problems is that you wont have surround sound, preventing you from knowing where the sounds (ex. footsteps) are coming from. Which can be very important if you like to play competitively most First person shooter games.

A separate mic would definitely work and there aer many that you can find for cheap on the internet on sites like Ebay, Craigslist or Amazon. just be sure to check out at least one review on the mic before buying it so you dont end up sounding like muffled static when you talk to your friends.

If your mic is built in, the best way to test out if its clear enough is to just ask your friends on Teamspeak, Discord or ingame voice chat if youre clear or if you have static. If they say that its good enough then youre fine using it.

The challenge is that most likely your headset with mic only uses one jack, and is likely a 4 pole (2 for left and right audio, 1 for mic, and 1 ground) whereas the sound jacks on the computer is 3 pole for audio input, and 2 pole for mic input. You will likely need an adapter to separate your one jack into 2 separate jacks (something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/3-5mm-Female-Earphone-Audio-Splitter/dp/B00S0RWKAS ).
As far as not having surround sound headphones...bah
