Personally, I'd recommend to get the MSI one because it's got better design. But it's up to you. GTX 970 is a very good card for the price. Choosing which cooler is a personal preference.

The only reason to get a reference 970 is if you don't want an open-air cooler (case restricting) or if you were going to water cool the card.
The MSI 970 Gaming is a great card. It has the best PCB and a great cooler, and so far has been a great card for overclocking.

I'm sorry I didn't really answer your question earlier haha. Anyway, it depends on your case. If your case has great airflow? Then an open style cooler would be best. But if it doesn't? Then get the reference blower style cooler.
