just wondering if this will work if i upgrade just the motherboard ?

Haha. No. An AMD CPU with a Intel chipset motherboard? You need to choose whether you want Intel or AMD. The GPU will work fine, whichever you choose

to the Z97, no way.

Intel and AMD are completely different, that CPU will never work in that motherboard.

Get an i5 4440 (or if you can a 4670/4690) and H87/97 motherboard instead.

That i5 is much better then your current CPU

I bought the board for 50 dollars when it went on sale. Just keep an eye on it if you got patience.

It will work just fine since AM3+ is backwards compatible with AM3 and as of the video cards it all depends on the power supply. If you have a 500-600W its no problem
