will an asus P5LP-LE support any dual core, like a pentium dual core, Core 2 duo, etc? Here are some of the original specs from the oem.

P5LP-LE (Limestone 1.04)
Socket: 775
System bus 533 MHz and 800 MHz
Chipset Northbridge: Intel 945G
Southbridge: Intel I/O Controller Hub 7 82801GB 1CH7
Memory Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
Non-ECC memory only
Supports PC2 3200 (400 MHz) and PC2 4200 (533 MHz) and PC2 5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs
Supports 1.8v DDR2 SDRAM

bios v3.09 2005

Currently i have a Pentium 4 630 3.0Ghz HT, 800Mhz, 2M L2

I kept searching and i googled "Intel 945G" and found http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945g/index.htm. It looks good so far.

Although i looked, i cant find any chips on my MB that has "Intel 945G" on it. Any way of finding out for sure. And just because If do have the 945G chipset, does that specifically mean that the MB will support a Dual Core?

Will the bios need updating? other drivers?

will i have to stay with a 800Mhz dual core?

will windows xp recogize the switch or will this require a reinstall?

Any guidance, please? Asus has replied, but said they cant give me the info, because the board was made for HP. HP is giving me the run around. HP wants me to buy a new machine. They cant make any money off me, if i upgrade.

How can i be sure if it will support a Core 2 Duo?

I would wait until your hp warranty runs out. Then get a low end replacement board in micro atx form factor and do some splicing of the case wires or change cases. You can try an 800 fsb core2 duo; it might work, but I can't honestly tell you if it will. Some 945g boards work with core2 duo, and some don't. I doubt you will notice much difference in performance; I would start by replacing the video card if your current board has a separate pci-e slot. Use a medium card; not high end, or you'll have to get a better power supply.

Well now regarding your question, I tried the link in your post and it led to a page not found on the Intel web site.
If I were looking for information on a motherboards support for a cpu I would check the manufacturers web site, and bios updates information.
If not finding my answer there, I would send an email to the boards tech support and also ask this question in the manufacturers support forums.
Asus has good support forums and you should be able to find your answer there.

All I know conroe starts with intel 965 chipset so the answer regarding your question is NO. Though I am not 100% sure but I have seen 965 chipset used in conroe but never in 945.

With due respect, if you don't know (like you admit), you probably shouldn't be giving advice. There are many 945 boards that support conroe.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+1070622728+107171083&Configurator=&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=

OP:

To answer your question, your system would most likely support a Pentium D, but probably not a Core2. The Conroe chips were introduced at a 1066Mhz FSB which you say your board does not support, so your particular 945 board probably does not meet the voltage requirements for Conroe.

The link is bad, but if you google 945G the same intel site pops up and is still good. That intel page says it wil work. So i am all confused. Why would the intel site say it would work? Look at that site and let me know after reading the Intel info. I am not saying you guys are wrong, i am sure you are correct, but the intel page says otherwise.

I have already upgraded my PS. I have plenty of wattage and amps to support up to one 8800GT or 3870.

I have seen the hp page for the MB, but it is a legacy page and has not been updated for years. Many of the more recent cpus may not be listed as supported.

I am either going to upgrade this machine or build a new one with a Core 2 Duo. So would it hurt to try sticking one in this board to see if it would work. Are the voltages, etc compatible?

By the way, Shadow, i like your avatar. See my name "50BMG" is my COD4 and BF2 id. your avatar looks like a Barret.

What your Intel web page isn't telling you is that there are some 945G boards that support Core2 and some that don't. It is strange, I know. Unfortunately, yours seems to be one that doesn't.

Doesn't C2D require higher spec'ed voltage regulators than previous CPUs? I think the issue is more that than chipset support. Of course your board would probably need a BIOS update to add C2D support which may or may not exist. E2xxx series and E4xxx series chips are more likely to be compatible because they have a bus speed of 800MHz which your board natively supports.

ok what about a "Pentium Dual Core"? I have read some good reviews, including Tom's article. Even tho it says pentium, isn't it similar architecture to the Core 2 family. So would it also be incompatible? Would the Pentium dual core be worth the effort?

I think it can support Dual Core.
Is your PC named Leonite2-GL8E?
Please refer to the following links:

CPU /处理器 Socket:775 接口
支持最高 Core 2 Duo E6x00 处理器
支持 Core 2 Duo E4x00 处理器
支持 Pentium E2000 系列处理器
支持 Pentium 4 6x1 系列处理器
支持 Celeron 处理器
支持 Celeron D 3xx 系列处理器

支持 means support
At least, it supports Pentium D Dual Core.
