Hello. This Forum has helped me alot of times before so I am asking here first. Computer info hardware/software will come in 30 minutes.

Problem: Computer freeze and/or restart itself also the monitor don't show the screen if I'm not waiting at least 10 minutes before restarting again.
Started 3-4 month ago and got worse over time until almost not working.

What I tried but didn't work:

  • Cleaning the computer from viruses, check for updates, change stuff like in power options, change graphic settings and small things.
Cleaning dust from inside and the computer trying other powercables.
Reinstall nvidia drivers with DDU in a clean install with old and latest drivers.
At last make a full clean installation of win 10 and install nvidia drivers from original CD I got with the computer from 2015 ( also update to the newest nvidia driver version but got much worse so I now have the old version that works better)

After clean install:
Nvidia card not installed, bad resolution on screen but works okey, did not try for so long.
Install original cd with Nvidia from 2015, graphic card GTX shows up in device manager as installed, the resolution and graphics gets good but the computer starts to freeze again and monitor getting the same problem with not turning on,
Windows update install some files, tries to update nvidia but can't. I go to Nvidia homepage and update to newest driver and computer start freeze again.
Go back with DDU to make clean install with nvidia original again. It is better but still can't play or use it. Often 5 minutes, sometimes 1 hour lucky.

Q1: Would a clean install of win 7 or 8.1 maybe fix this? Wich one is the better if so?

Q2: Should I try to uninstall my graphic card and only run on Intel and see how the computer works. If it works fine exept for bad graphics it should mean that my graphic card in the is the problem
or
Q2b Can it also be the monitor (old but good, fell on the floor once and the coulors seems to be a bit shady), that now can't handle to show the good graphics and therefor freezes? I have not tried to plugg the computer to another monitor and see.

Power supplies do degrade over time. In the case of retail PCs, the power supplies are cheap. They aren't designed to last. After all the idea is to sell you another one.

So to answer your question, it isn't that the graphics card requires more power as it ages. It is that the power supply output in watts decreases over time. And cheap power supplies degrade faster than quality ones.
As to the question of returning to Windows 7 or 8. I've always preferred Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8. But it is up to personal preference on that decision.

But I would point out that Windows 7 support is ending in the not too distant future (January 14, 2020).

Hello and thank you. I try get the info from my computer but it just shuts down, takes 15 min more
but about the monitor it is :

Lcd
L22W-5
Fujutsi Siemens

100-240V, 50/6 Hz 1,5 A

I will tomorrow try to get my computer to a friend and check on his monitor if it works .

Its the original I got with computer, but you can see it is used.

Input 100-240 V 3,2 A
50-60 Hz

Output 14,5 (or 19,5 dont see) 11,8 A

Or maybe that is not for the graphic card but the whole computer.. I will check .

Okey so before the computer shut down I saw that the BIOS after my reinstall version was from 2015.

If reinstall won't work and if it is not the monitor I guess I sooner or later have to leave it to a professional or sell the computer. I see my graphic card is worth 200 dollars at lest....not bad after so long time.

The monitor that you listed is from 2007. I would guess that is at least some of the problem.

The power supply info that you provided only pertains to the electrical outlet not the output in watts.
If it was a retail PC, they tend to be in the 200-300 watt range. That would only be adequate for GTX 950 OR 1050.

Is it that the adapter and cables gets old or why did it work for 2 years and not now with the adapter Asus themself send with computer---is it maybe the monitor and computer parts that demands more power when older?

System Power Supply Requirements for a single NVIDIA Reference Design GeForce GTX 950
• NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 350 Watt or greater system power supply. (Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor.)
• the system power supply must also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 23 Amps or greater
• the system power supply should also have at least one 75-Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector. There are some non-reference design cards that require one 150 Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector (e.g. EVGA GeForce GTX 950 SSC 2 GB [02G-P4-2957-KR]).

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most critical factor.

Thank you for the support.
Yes I always had the feeling of maybe something with the powersupply because how I notice it shuts down more often when I try to use it more..togheter with problems that came with the install of the graphic card.
I have two input , the one I use for 230 W, and then its one above for 180 W but a differnt type.

Anyway...I guess Im going to first try another monitor, test a stronger adapter and come back if I need more help 😀

Update: I found another caple for the powerinput for my computer. So one is for the cpu and one gpu I belive, 230 v plus 180 v. I just hope the 180v works without having to make som change inside computer or in BIOS because the it did not helped the monitor but I felt like the computer had more power in startup.

So I tried the monitor on a older computer, not bad but not that good, old and integrated Intel graphic. It worked with win 8.1 very good.

So I did a clean install again with win 10 on the computer I want to fix. Now I will see if it works good without nvidiacard installed and so I can get into BIOS and so and see if there is some settings wrong in power settings or something I can change.
