I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card to an MSI R9 280X Gaming OC but I'm worried about my power supply, as I don't think I'm gonna be able to upgrade it right away alongside my graphics card. It has a 6-pin and a 6+2-pin connector but will the wattage be enough to power it?

That site might be a bit off in their power wattage requirements - 650W for a standard R9-290X? It requires a competent power supply, not just one with a ridiculously high wattage. PC Part Picker estimates that for an Intel i5 and a R9-280X is about 380W. A solid 550W should do the trick. Power requirements are usually grossly overestimated by graphics card manufacturers because they automatically assume that poor quality power supplies are going to be used. A Seasonic, Super Flower, or one of the new Andyson units should handle the trick at 550W minimum.
