Hello Tomshardware, I'm simply wondering if my Intel i7 980X (3.33ghz, six cores, hyperthreading) will pose a potential bottleneck on a GTX 1070 or 1080. It's a nine year old CPU, and although the numbers are fine, the architecture is ancient, so I really have no clue.

Thanks!

An i7-980X is still a decent CPU for gaming despite it's age. If you were to attempt some overclocking you could squeeze out around 10-20% more performance. Don't worry about a bottleneck and just get the fastest GPU you can afford that will work with your power supply. Your system is old though, and it would be advisable to save money toward a new platform, so it may be better for you to buy a GTX 1070/GTX 1660ti/RTX2060 Super instead of a GTX 1080/RTX 2070.
