Will my CPU bottleneck my GPU?

Hey guys, i'm thinking of buying a Sapphire HD 7970ghz and i was wondering if my cpu would bottleneck it, and is there a better GPU i can get for £300 - £400 instead of the 7970

Here are my specs -

CPU - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 10MB Cache 2.8ghz (OC to 3.5ghz)
GPU - AMD HD 5770 1GB
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H
RAM - 16gb 1333mhz
PSU - 500Watt

If my CPU would cause a bottleneck what CPU do you recommend?

I would go with the HD7870 Ghz edition or one of the higher clocked HD7950 models. What model PSU are you using?

So is my CPU fine?

Get a Sapphire Radeon 7950 Vapor-X... It will be right for your PSU. Its OCed and has one of the best looking and performing coolers ever...

OK, now that i saw your PSU, Dont go for the Radeon 7950. Go for a 7870 or a 7870XT... Or try to upgrade your PSU... Id recommend it

Your PSU worries me greatly. Its a cheap Solytech that doesn't do well when approaching its max load. Plus they are known to have failures in general.

If I had about £400 to spend, this is how I would spend it, assuming you don't already have an SSD. I would also sell the old GPU and PSU on ebay. The HD5770 is worth about £40 at auction.

I've already got a SDD. I'll have £320 left after buying a new PSU is there a better GPU for around that price?
I use the computer for extreme gaming and video recording/editing/rendering. Monitors are 1920 x 1080

Ah, we'll cross that off the list then. I would still stick with the HD7870 (edited my post above for why). What is your current model computer monitor?

What case are you using? (just curious)

Don't know what it's called but i have 30cm of space for a GPU, but i'll properly end up changing it to a bigger one if need be.

I would sell the following:
GPU - £40
CPU+HSF - £75
Motherboard - £30
PSU - £15? (or trash/donate it/keep as emergency spare)
RAM - £35-45 (depending on model, etc)
=£180

Then, I would purchase this + a case of your choice:

Assuming you pick something like the Corsair 400R or the Cooler Master Storm Enforcer or HAF922, you'll end up with a net cost of around £500 (~£680 minus ~£180 for selling current parts).

Since you do video editing and encoding, the FX8350 will serve you well. The faster memory will help to eliminate any bottleneck cause by the 1333Mhz memory you have now (2 dimms leaving room to expand to 32GB at some point). The graphics card can be bumped up to anything you want at this point. However, the HD7870 that is in there is an excellent card and should be able to max everything out at 1080p, especially with the faster FX8350.

If you don't end up getting a new case, I would use that money to jump up to an HD7950:

It will fit in your current case and, when overclocked, should match or exceed the performance of a stock HD7970.

The one I listed is the new 2013 version of the Cosair H60 "closed loop" liquid cooler. I have personal experience with it (and a dozen other similar solutions). I feel like the new "refreshed for 2013" Corsair liquid coolers have several advantages over big air now. Better temps, doesn't bend the motherboard like big air, easier installation, doesn't interfere with RAM, 5 year warranty, etc. The CM Hyper 212 is a good direct-touch air cooler. But, you will see better temps, especially at full load when overclocked, with the H60.

I've got the H60 attached to the case exhaust of my HAF922 case (push pull config using case air). Results were 10C better at idle and 18C better at full load when compared to my old cooler (almost identical to the Hyper 212 but different brand).
