Will my mobo handle these cards?

Hello, I have an asus m5a99x evo r2.0, and was wanting to either get an nvidia 980 ti 6 gb or a radeon r9 290x 8 gb. Would my mobo handle those, or would I need new ones? If so which would you more knowledgeable pc builders recommend? It's an amd mobo to answer that now, but it doesn't have pci 3.0 on it. Only one board that I know of that's amd has it, and is mostly sold out right now. Is 3.0 backwards compatible?
