Will my MOBO support/run a Sata3 HDD?

Hey guys, this here is my reasonably old motherboard - GA-P35-DS3P ( Link below )

I've been getting this windows 7 pop-up telling me my 500gb HDD ( Which i just use for media storage and games ) needs to be backed up as its dying or something, so basically i'm fine with it, the clicking noise has been annoying for some time also i've been meaning to upgrade to a 2tb over the 500gb anyway, but i'm not sure if my mobo can use the newer SATA3 HDD, Anyone able to confirm my suspicions ? Some forums say you can, all Sata is the same etc and others are say no etc so if anyone can help me out with this, would be greatly appreciated

Yes, it should work fine. Your mobo has SATA II ports (more properly, SATA 3Gb/s). But any SATA 6 Gb/s drive is supposed to automatically negotiate the communication speed with the port it is connected to and adapt to that instantly. That's an essential part of the backwards compatibility of SATA designs.
