I have the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H and i am wondering whether or not it would work with Nvidia GTX 970?

I want to upgrade my GPU but I wouldn't want to overspend, seeing how GTX 970 is a good and pretty cheap card I'm kind of interested in buying it.

At the moment i have GTX 780 which is a pretty powerful card but it really drains my PSU, and again, seeing as GTX 970 uses less power it's becoming more and more intriguing.

I wouldn't upgrade, the performance between the two really is the power consumption and the 970 is a slightly better overclocker with a tad bit more vram and it would have full DX12 support. But if you are looking at just power consumption it would only be like $6-7 less a year. The 780 will have some support for dx12 but it won't be able to fully leverage DX12 like a 970. So you could just buy a 2nd and get a larger power supply if you don't have one already, but if you are just looking at power consumption it won't be worth it.
