Hello! Currently I have an Msi A320M-a pro motherboard. Yes. I know, it is bad. I wanted to upgrade to a newer cpu from my Athlon X4 950. Planning on getting the Ryzen 5 3500X. So will the Athlon cpu stop working if I update the bios to a newer version?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

What BIOS version are you currently on for your motherboard?

I would advise against upgrading your processor from the Athlon to the Ryzen 3000 series as the 3000 and 5000 series were known to draw a lot more power than the 1000 and 2000 series processors. The lack of a proper VRM design would most certainly result in the board or the entire system coming to a halt. If not, very likely your VRM will cause the processor to throttle.

I'm a newbie in all of this, and I've tried checking it through the command line. I am using Arch linux
sudo dmidecode -t bios | grep -i "version"
It gave me the version 1.40 I don't really think it is a version (looking at the msi page)
