I'd like to upgrade to a GTX 970 for the free Witcher 3 and Arkam Knight deal. Would my current components support a GTX 970?

Solution
Yes, the GTX 970 should run, at most you might need to update your mobo's BIOS in order to get the GPU recognized, other than that there should be no issues at all (obviously you'll have to uninstall your current video drivers, clean with DDU and then install latest drivers for the GTX 970).

One thing to mention, you should really get at least a total of 8GB of RAM, your current 4 will limit you greatly in any modern game since these use easily 6GB from start.

Thank you!

I'm reluctant to buy new memory because my parts are so old (almost 6 years now, except for the PSU which is only 7 months old). I'm kind of waiting for the CPU/mobo to die.

Also because somehow after 6 years, my CPU is still near the top of the list in Tom's hierarchy chart: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html
