Question Will my ram work with this motherboard?

So I am looking to upgrade to the Ryzen 7 3800x from the Ryzen 7 1700, which will require me to buy a new motherboard.

Will the ram work? The motherboard lists the ram type as DIMM, and my ram type is DDR4. My PC knowledge is limited, I am usually able to pick parts that work but I haven't seen DIMM before, and I only have only built two PCs (my own and a friends). Any help?

Your current RAM should work. DDR4 are DIMMs.

Unless you want something like PCIe 4.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 2 built in. You don't need a new motherboard. Your current motherboard supports the 3800x with the F40 BIOS update or later. In fact as BIOS F42d disables PCIe Gen 4 with Ryzen 3. That indicates BIOS F40 and F41 may give you PCIe 4.0 on that motherboard.

The specification DIMM is not the same specification as the DDR4 specification. They are each refering to two different aspects of the RAM.

Think of DDR4 as essentially the generation of RAM. Then DIMM is the type of the RAM within that generation. So you can have UDIMM, SODIMM, DRAM or a couple other types, and all of them are still just different types of DDR4 generation RAM. There is also DDR2 and DDR3 RAM which are the older generations.

So since your current motherboard also uses DDR4 DIMM RAM that RAM will be compatible with your new board as well.
