Hi, thanks for viewing this thread. Just looking for some quick advice - I am looking to upgrade my GPU but do not know if I need to upgrade other parts too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

CPU: Intel Core i5 3550 3.3Ghz (Ivy Bridge)
RAM: 8GB
MOB: ASUS P8H61-MX
Current GPU: GTX 560
PSU: Xilence 580W dual 12V

Others components
- 500GB Seagate ST500DM002
- 256GB Crucial MX100SSD
- Optical drive
- Coolermaster CM-690 II Lite Black
- 3x 120mm standard case fans

Many thanks!

Richy

Your build is perfectly fine to support a gtx 970. I'm pretty sure the power supply has enough watts for it, but it is really close. I would suggest to get a bigger psu as well, maybe 600-650w. But I'm not entirely sure. Try to check on pcpartpicker for your entire system watt requirement

get a new psu, 650w, and get a 390, it is better than the 970, the only downside is the higher power consumption

Thanks for the responses. I put my PC into pc partpicker and it comes out at 340W with the current GPU.

With a 970 GTX the total does not change and stays around 340W. Is this okay for a 580W PSU?

i do not know that psu, but i suspect it isn't very high quality i really suggest upgrading that too, like a seasonic 620w or something. and get a 390, it is better than the 970, and it has async, which is important for dx12

Thanks.

I however I feel I am having heating problems with my PC already (motherboard idles at 66oC) and heard the 390 gets a fair bit hotter than the 970?

Dumb question - Would the 390 have any compatibility problems with my intel CPU?

of course not, and you can add a casefan or 2
