Hi There

System specs

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Kentsfield 65nm Technology

RAM
3.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 332MHz (5-5-5-15)

soon to be 4GB DDR2 PC 5300

Motherboard
ACER EG31M (CPU 1)

Graphics
Compaq S2021 (1600x900@60Hz)
ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO (Sapphire/PCPartner)

Hard Drives
466GB Seagate ST3500830AS ATA Device (SATA)

PSU
liteon PS 6301-06A (possibly 250w maybe 300w)

I am in the market to upgrade my graphics card and have narrowed it down to the Sapphire Radeon HD7750 HDMI 2GB or the Gigabyte GeForce GT 640 OC Dual-DVI HDMI 2GB

Questions

I'm pretty sure i'll have to upgrade my PSU so how many watt should I go for ?

With a new PSU will my system handle either card

which one should i go for?

Cheers in advance

A good 400W-500W PSU should do the trick for either cards. Buy from these brands: Corsair, XFX, Seasonic because bad quality PSUs can destroy your system. Also, what purpose are you using this graphics card? On low-end cards like these, a 1GB and a 2GB model make almost no difference unless with ultra high resolution/visual effects (AA, etc). Try to get a 1GB model of a better card such as a 7770/GTX 650. If I had to I would go with the 7750.

Presumably, 1600x900.

By the way, have you considered 1GB models of the 7770, 7790 and 7850? You really don't need to pay more for a 2GB version.

it will be 1600x900 resolution

I've narrowed it down to the following cards given my budget !money is NZ dollars where im from)

Palit GeForce GTX 650 HDMI 1GB for $155

Gigabyte Radeon HD7770 OC HDMI Dual-DisplayPort 1GB $165

HIS Radeon HD7770 iCooler HDMI Dual-DisplayPort 1GB $165

Gigabyte Radeon HD7770 OC HDMI Dual-DisplayPort 1GB $172

Which of these would be the most suited to playing the likes of old republic on mid- high settings with smooth gameplay?

Get the 7770, it is better than the GTX 650. I would probably get a Gigabyte, but also see if you can get a 7790. A 7770 requires a 500 watt power supply, but a good 450 watt probably can handle it. Remember, the 7770 requires an additional 6-pin PCIe power connector.
