will my vga monitor work with my dvi graphics card?

I bought a new computer that should arrive soon.

The graphics card will be a MSI GTX760 4GDDR5 card, which has only DVI-I,DVI-D, HDMI & DP outputs.
My monitor on the other hand has only a single VGA input.
I bought a DVI-D DL to VGA adapter but on my current card's DVI out (GeForce 9500GT) I couldn't get any output.

the cable I was using was single link and the adapter / card was dual link though, if that matters. (also I should note the card was DVI-I but works perfectly with a DVI-D to HDMI cable)

There's a chance that the cable is just bad since I don't have any other DVI devices to test it on, but I heard that the graphics card must support analog output for the VGA adapter to work.
So- will my new card work with the adapter? also, should I buy a dual link cable for it?

DVI-D to VGA isn't going to work (digital to analog). You need an DVI-I to VGA adapter (I'm running the 2GB version of that GPU with a VGA monitor): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999201

Although I'm pretty sure one already comes with the GPU.

EDIT: I just checked the back of my PC and the adapter I have is made by MSI. I've never bought any so your GPU should come with an adapter.

EDIT: I just checked the back of my PC and the adapter I have is made by MSI. I've never bought any so your GPU should come with an adapter.

So I need all DVI-D infrastructure (port, cable adapter) for the signal to come through?

If it doesn't come with an adapter, or it does have one but doesn't work, you could get a display port to VGA active adapter, display ports can work with both analog and digital, passive adapters often don't work so just better to go straight for an active adapter, you should find some easy enough on eBay.

DVI-I, not DVI-D. D is digital, VGA is analog and I sends out both signals. You can't turn digital to analog without an active converter.

DVI-I, not DVI-D. D is digital, VGA is analog and I sends out both signals. You can't turn digital to analog without an active converter.

Right, my bad.
Anyway I found a male DVI-I to female VGA passive adapter that works fine so I don't have to get a new cable.
