Will my XPS 420 actually fit any standard ATX power supply?

When I measured my XPS 420 case where the psu is, it seems as though it would only fit a PSU with a width of 5.6 inches maximum (though it's a hard angle to measure with my current PSU in there, I'm pretty confident my measurement is correct). However, most forums say that any standard ATX power supply should work in the xps 420. This is the PSU I've been eyeing: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438048&cm_re=evga_power_supply-_-17-438-048-_-Product

I'm upgrading so that I can swap out my 9800 gt for a gtx 960 mini, but I'm concerned this PSU won't fit properly. Has any one had any experience with this that can confirm concretely that it will fit? Thank you so much in advance for your time and any help!

Hi, I have no personal experience, but two of the three measurements, width & height are std for
ATX power supplies. The std ATX width is 150mm or very slightly more than 5.9 inches. So, if your 5.6"
is accurate it won't fit width wise.

However, the specs for the XPS 420 show it is 7.4" wide. So, if that is the case with your , a std PSU will fit.
Re-measure to be sure.

Hi again - The 420 also appears visually to be a mid-size tower in which case it will fit a std ATX PSU.

I think you are good to go.

that's the trick to determine if the dell case is drilled for a standard atx or a dell proprietary psu ?

look at dell forums on your model and find things as this ...

''The XPS 420 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply, most standard ATX power supplies with either, a 24-pin or 20+4-pin, main motherboard power connector, are compatible and can be installed.''

looks like you should be good ??

Yep, turns out you and the other fellow were both right! I ended up ordering the PSU after I saw your replies. I just installed it and it fits just fine. The screws fit a little wonky because of the locking mechanism dell had for it's power supply being slightly in the way, but ultimately it fit! Thanks for your help!

Gr8 - enjoy!
