Will not boot Windows 10 after BIOS update

Hi,

I have an Alienware Aurora R4. Yesterday I updated the BIOS from A07 to A11. Everything seemed normal but upon rebooting, now the computer will not load Windows 10. By pressing F2 I am able to enter the BIOS and everything appears normal. It indicates A11 on startup.

Now, the PC will either try to load Windows and will take me to the blue screen with "BOOT DEVICE INACCESSIBLE" as the error, or will bring me to the Alien Respawn screen. The latter will not detect any problems in the Analysis, and will show checks next to Partition Table, Master Boot Record, Drives, and Boot files.

If I go through with the Windows recovery section I can get to the command prompt and using that can still see my C: drive with everything on it, so the PC still recognizes the boot drive is physically there.

When I attempt to use Bootrec.exe, I reach the point where I am able to use /scanos but it will say "Windows Installations Detected: 0" and I am unable to proceed further. I have attempted to rebuild the BCD as outlined here but without success. I have noticed that I do not have a folder called "BOOT" on my C drive as the description would seem is necessary, but it does exist under C:\Windows.

In BIOS, it will show the HDD under Integrated Devices, but does not list it as an option in the Boot order. Could that be the problem? SATA is set to AHIC not RAID.

I want to stress that it was working perfectly fine until this update, so I highly doubt there is a loose connection or anything like that.

I am hoping it's something relatively easy to fix, but it certainly seems quite complicated. I am hoping someone here can help me.

Thanks.

Solution
You have to change sata controller mode to setting that was before BIOS update. It has been reset obviously.
If you don't remember which mode it was, try all: AHCI,IDE,RAID.

Thanks. I tried that and it allowed the hard disk to show up in the boot list in BIOS, but then it would not detect it when actually booting. It also made the HDD no longer appear in the Integrated devices list.

What did you change it from and to? Make sure it is top of the boot sequence. It may also be related to a secure boot setting. They are the only things I can think of that would stop your hdd being seen at all.

If that doesn't work, you can try running the Windows repair tool from USB maybe. Unfortunately Dell Alienware are proprietary systems and have BIOS (and minds) of their own.

Boot Mode was UEFI. I changed it to Legacy. When booting that way it did not detect the internal hard drive at all. It said Press F2 to go back to BIOS or F5 for "PSA" (Pre-Boot System Assessment) it scanned everything in the system (CPU, fans, memory, CD drives, HDD). All tests passed.

You, sir, are a genius.

Setting from AHCI to RAID seemed to have solved the problem. Thank you you so much!
