It bears repeating: If you want an answer to your question, set-aside your awareness that it's a bad idea to do so and try it; then come back and tell us what happens.
To answer the first half of your question, the missing battery won't keep the PC from turning on. It just keeps the CMOS memory refreshed. Your BIOS may revert to default w/o the battery.
