I am currently planning to build budget comp. I was wondering if prices was going to go considerably down for the sales in Decemember? I am hoping to get A64 3400 under $200, so wonder if it will go down by end. Since socket 754 tops out at 3700, I don't would really like to get the 3400.

Why the 754...939 has SO much more potential, and the 90nm 3000+ already sells for under $200. It has far more potential (with dual channel DDR support), anand did an artical recently, they got the 3000+ (1.8GHz) to run at 2.6GHz WITH RETAIL HSF!!!

Yes the mobo's cost a bit more, but if the 754 3400+ drops in price for the holidays, the 939 mobos probably will too!

AMD isn't phasing out S754 'til fall of '05, so wait 'til then i'm sure the prices will be cheap.

Nforce3 Ultra chipset mobo for the S939 will probably drop in price once Nforce4 series comes out with SLI. And the 3000/3200 for the S939 seems like great deals.

By time I buy another comp again it will be atleast 3 year if not 4 or 5. I doubt 939 socket or any other MB will last still then. Also I just getting 512 mb value corsair ram and I haven't doubt it will overclock. In fact since I have never done OC, I doubt I will even bother about it. So I am quite sure any 754 CPU I buy at the same price for any 939 CPU will run fastter at stock speeds.

whether or not it will last till then, the 939 will have more potential.

I'm hoping prices get cheaper. Graduate school is damn expensive. Hopefully those socket "A"s will get a lot cheaper soon. A XP 3000+ would be all that I would need for the next year and a half.

Going s754 is indeed not attractive. Actually, as far as I'm concerned, s754 should be phased out altogether. Apart from yields, there is no reason to keep the two lines (s754 and s939) of processors...

I wonder if they can supply much more s754 processors than they can s939 ones?... that's the only possible reason for them not to go s939 altogether...

And if they can get more s754 processors than s939 ones out the door, then why is the price difference so small? From the price difference, the choice is obvious: s939 all the way!

754 still cheaper than most 939. Right now the 754 3400 is selling for $234 according to pricewatch, while socket 939 3200 is at $125, for $15 more 3400 still give better performace. That 3500 is at $285, $50 more and the 754 3200 at $180. 754 CPU still got more value for peformace left in them unless AMD goes and lower 939 prices more.

Another question. You guys say 939 has more potential, what potential are you exactly talking about?

Prices for tech will always drop, a garrauntee is just by that newest FX-55 or P4-EE and watch the bargain bell ring...

Highly doubt 939 prices will get cheaper than 754 for atleast another 6 months, which is quite awhile. If prices drops during the next few months will have the 754 and 939 prices drop equally for the most part. However by 1 year I can probably bet 939 will take over 754 completely, but that still is quite awhile.
