I did some research and HDD is MOST LIKELY is the cause. Now I am not sure, but am backing my HDD up as I speak. But the real problem is, it is SATA and my HDD that I have to replace it with is IDE! so my question is, if I go out and buy a SATA to IDE adapter, will it work on this DELL or any DELL model? please let me know. thanks.

Solution

Try blaming Symantec and not Microsoft, go back to the beginning, skip the Norton Ghost stage and use Acronis True Image to make a proper and valid bootable ISO.

Your original problem was caused by a Repair install which cannot happen by accident or malware. That's why your old files now live in a set of folders called {yourusername}.old or windows.old.

There is already a slot in the motherboard for you to plug an IDE hard drive into and even if there isn't a spare, you could disconnect the optical driver for the time it takes to do the job - no converter necessary. That also saves you buying a ribbon cable.

unfortunately, i cannot use old IDE HDD on this DELL. the CD ROM uses SATA as well. and I dont feel like chasing PCI adapters for this sort of thing. the DELL is really tiny and small, id have to find the right PCI card and dont think its worth it. I am just gonna use my IDE to run Windows on my PC and give this DELL my current SATA. its for my mom so she needs it ASAP, and then ill just buy myself a new SATA in a week.

oh well, i need the newest SATA, anyway. the one im running on is first generation so its fairly slow compared to others. 3.0Gbp/s 8mb cache. i just searched for hard drives and the only bad part is all the newest SATA 6.0 64mb Cache ones arent very stable there is anywhere from 20-50% 1 star ratings on them. ill just buy it from a store so I could return it anytime if it goes down.
