Yes and no. Not really anything such as 'normal' dram, it's all sdram, some vendors get lazy about descriptions.
Any ram from any other kit can have issues, but it's minimized by using exact same spec'd ram.
So if your old ram is 8Gb of ddr4 at 2133MHz Cas 16, then the new ram should also be 8Gb of ddr4 at 2133MHz Cas 16.
You cannot mix different DDR, ddr3 is not compatible with ddr4 or ddr2 etc.
Must also match up the form factor. Sdram is a chip type, it's found in both pc and laptop. Pc's use DIMM, laptops use SODIMM form factors. Considerably different physical pincounts and size. Sodimm is much shorter in length, but taller, pc DIMM is much longer in length but not as tall.
So be careful with what vendors say, they'll just as often call laptop sodimm as sdram and technically be right, but realistically it's misleading.
