I was thinking of getting a 290 but someone recommended that I should get a 290x instead. Will the Corsair CX600 psu run with my pc and the 290x?

My pc specs:
CPU: AMD FX 4130
GPU: Palit Geforce GTX 650 OC (or the 290x if my psu is ok).
RAM: 8GB (2x4gb) Corsair XMS3 1600mhz DDR3
PSU: Corsair CX600
Case: Zalman Z11 Plus (I haven't added any fans at all, I just use the standard ones.)
Hard Drive: S-ATA 1tb
Motherboard: Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3

Will my power supply work with the 290x and the rest of my pc?

It may run. But its more of gamble. R9 290X require a quality (which the CX600 is not) 650W PSU that can deliver 33Amps or more on its +12V PSU. The CX600 can deliver 40Amps on its +12V rail, which may appear ok. But this one has poor capacitors, besides 50 wattage shortage. Also this product is not known for its longevity.

So, I suggest you get the following PSU:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Power Supply: Antec HCG M 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $59.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Probably, it's not a great PSU so upgrade that cx600 as soon as possible.

I also agree with yeskay's post...
